A recent report by Interpol reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is now a primary factor in cybercrimes across Africa. The report found that AI is involved in approximately 55% of reported cybercrimes on the continent. Financial losses from these crimes have significantly increased, more than doubling from $192 million to $484 million. Additionally, there were over 600,000 reported cases of digital extortion involving deepfakes. These findings highlight the growing threat of AI-driven cybercrime in Africa. This matters as it underscores the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect individuals and businesses from these emerging threats.
