A new artificial intelligence developed by Google's Deepmind has improved the accuracy of tropical cyclone forecasting. The AI, called WeatherNext, can predict cyclone tracks and intensity about a day further in advance than current leading models. This advancement is comparable to a decade of progress made in traditional weather forecasting methods. The code and model weights behind WeatherNext are available for public use on GitHub. This improvement in forecasting capabilities is expected to aid in better disaster preparedness and response. This matters because more accurate cyclone forecasts can save lives and reduce the impact of these powerful storms.
